16,677 calls were answered by Supportline 179 volunteers during 2012 and over 200 families also benefited from the support provided by volunteers within Programm Ulied Darna within the same year. All this thanks to the dedication and commitment of a team of volunteers within Aġenzija Appoġġ. However, more volunteers are required and thus the Agency is currently recruiting new volunteers to provide support within these services.

Each year a number of volunteers dedicate their time to support children, families and vulnerable adults in need, who come in contact with the Foundation for Social Welfare Services. Supportline 179 is a 24-hour service, dealing with a wide range of presenting problems including domestic violence, child abuse, suicidal tendencies, loneliness, emotional difficulties, behavioural problems, substance abuse, and gambling, amongst others.

Currently there are 77 volunteers assisting this service, complementing a team of professionals. However, more volunteers are needed to contribute to this service, especially during night shifts and public holidays.

Programm Ulied Darna is another service offered by Aġenzija Appoġġ which is supported by volunteers. It offers time, skills, friendship, information and practical help – such as working with parents on parental skills as well as other basic skills, such as budgeting skills, housekeeping skills and child care; assisting children with homework, and accompanying parents to appointments.

This is aimed to facilitate the life of families who are receiving other services from the Foundation for Social Welfare Services. Currently there are 55 volunteers within Programm Ulied Darna. More are needed, especially but not exclusively, to provide transportation to children and families to important appointments.

Persons who want to make a difference and offer their service to children and families in need of support, may call on 2295 9000 during office hours or else visit www.appogg.gov.mt for more information. Application forms may be sent online, downloaded from here or collected from Aġenzija Appoġġ and sent duly filled, to the attention of Svetlana Buttigieg, Aġenzija Appoġġ, 36, St. Luke’s Road, G’Mangia, PTA 1318 or by sending an email on supportlineteam179.appogg@gov.mt.

Applications should be received by Friday 9th August 2013. Professional training will be provided to all selected applicants.
